A recent evaluation by a NASA acquisition program highlights the growing maturity of commercial Earth observation providers, with Satellogic’s NewSat constellation earning official recognition for scientific data quality. The assessment, which focused on the performance of the Mark IV and Mark V sensor generations, validates the strategic direction of the company’s data generation capabilities.

The analysis, conducted by NASA subject matter experts, reviewed 60 instances of top-of-atmosphere reflectance imagery spanning 2021 to 2025. The evaluation focused on radiometric and geometric accuracy, revealing strong performance in key areas. The majority of the constellation’s spectral bands demonstrated radiometric precision within 10% of reference values from a widely used MODIS instrument, while more than half of the bands achieved a “Good” signal-to-noise ratio. Geometric fidelity surpassed the specified spatial response requirements, although the data indicated nuanced differences between the sensor generations. Specifically, the Mark IV sensor achieved an “Excellent” rating for spatial response, while the Mark V was rated “Basic.”

Following the report’s release, the company initiated targeted adjustments to its data processing workflows to address the findings and recommendations. A subsequent review of the revised products is underway, with NASA expected to deliver updated findings in the near future.
